+Still thousands of people die in the Mediterranean sea. Several NGOs do their best to rescue as many people as possible. But instead of thanking them, politics renders them a plaything: Those who rescue people do not discourage them. Those who rescue people do not defend Fortress Europe.

+As a stimulus for the EU-council meeting on September 20th 2018, we prepare topics for the further development of the European Union as a social and educational union and discuss the European Pillars of Social Rights, even though they have been disregarded by the Austrian presidency of the European Council. This especially concerns the importance of social fundamental rights such as the right to work, inclusion, social security and equal treatment. From Brussels, EU delegates Joe Weidenholzer (SPÖ) and Michel Reimon (Grüne), as well als Freek Spinnewijn (FEANTSA) will participate.
+In the European Social Charter nuanced guiding principles and laws have been worked out, which have also been ratified by Austria. However, Austria has excluded individual clauses. Hence, Austria denies people suable individual rights such as the right to work, the right to be protected from poverty, exclusion and homelessness and the right to housing.
+These topics, of fundamental importance for a social society, are taken up in three dimensions of the European Pillars of Social Rights, which have been published by the EU-comission and the EU-parliament in November 2017 as a memorandum.
+Those three dimensions are:
+Equal opportunities and access to the job market
+Fair working conditions
+Social security and social inclusion
+What does that mean for Salzburg and Austria?
+We want to establish the connection between the choice of topics and the intensity of their treatment on the European level and the national reality of cuts in social services, the undermining of labor laws, the gender pay gap etc. Thus we want to open up new vistas – those of bottom-up processes concerning politics and public – based on the motto: we tackle issues that are important for all of us.
+In a world café we discuss the right to work (Peter Ruhmannseder / Judith Pühringer), the right to housing (Heinz Schoibl), inclusion (Karin Astegger) as well as equal treatment (Frauenrat Salzburg). Based on the “Gemeinwohlökonomie” (economy for the common good) we will come up with suggestions for social, ecological and solidary politics. The programme will be accompanied by readings from author Petra Nagenkögel.

+On July 1st 2018, the Austrian government took over the presidency of the EU-council. Chaired by the Austrian government a summit of European leaders takes place in Salzburg on September 20th. The Austrian ÖVP-FPÖ government is working on full-scales offensives against social and democratic achievements. Its neoliberal and antidemocratic plans fit in with the policies of the European Union, solely based on economic interests. In the interest of big companies and financial capital the EU tries, in cooperation with the national governments, to prolong working times, to increase competition among the working population and to re-design social insurances in a way, so that they become a profitable investment for financial companies. Such politics knowingly accepts further destruction of the environment in Europe and elsewhere in the world.

+It is often suggested that by making good choices when buying in supermarkets we can support a good food economy. However, this does not touch the general framework, which encompasses land-grabbing, corporate power and exploitation. The predominant food economy increasingly undermines the human right to nutrition. A real alternative is the movement for food sovereignty, in which consumers and producers cooperate.
+In our presentation we debate the consequences of free trade and the common agricultural policy of the European union and point out, how food sovereignty here offers possible solutions. In the last part of the event, we would like to invite the audience to think how they can cooperatively participate in the shaping of a democratic food policy.

+Watch the Med Alarm Phone is a project which was founded by activists from Europe and North Africa in 2014. The self-organised call-center for refugees who are in distress at sea should ensure a safe rescue and prevent human right violations such as pushbacks.
+At that, those in distress get a second chance to make their call for help heard by sea rescue. Each emergency is recorded and publicly accompanied till safe rescue. If necessary, further support is drummed up. Thereby pressure is exerted on those responsible, at least as far as possible.

+We will carry a list with almost all the names of those who have drowned in the Mediterranean Sea from the Tribühne Lehen to the Festspielhaus, or as close as we can get. Bring along candles! We want to show those responsible for isolationist policy that they are to blame for the dying in the Mediterranean Sea.
